Hail! Comics be here!
What’s on YOUR Pull List?
- Batman #28
- Green Arrow #28
- Predator: Hunters #4
It’s a small week, after all. But after my last trip to my LCS, I need a light week. Hell, back-to-back light weeks would be great, mm’kay? Just read that as Gary Cole in 1999’s Office Space.
I’m still behind on some books, and Batman happens to be one of them. Two or three weeks ago, I finished “The Button” and read Tom King’s collab with Mitch Gerads that featured Swamp Thing. I thought I was making progress. But with Rebirth, and I’ll say it again, when you fall behind now…it’s twice as bad. And once you reach a certain “behind” threshold, that level of belated action results in reaching for a different book…only perpetuating the problem.
“Nick, you just described the perils of procrastination.”
Green Arrow is in the middle of its “Hard Traveling Hero” arc, and boy is it chock-full of collabs. Last month was Wonder Woman, this month is Supes. I’ll say it again, the art team tandem of Juan Ferreyra and Otto Schmidt can go head to head with any other DC Rebirth double-ship book. They’re by no means indistinguishable from one another, their strength doesn’t lie in merely mirroring the other, but in pairing well with Ben Percy’s scripts. This is the best run since Lemire’s, and certainly one of the top two since the New 52 launched in 2011.
What is it with Aliens books being obsessed with colons? They love em. Predator: Hunters is no different. What is different, however, is that this book wants us to really get to learn about these protagonists and feel for them. You know, BEFORE THEY DIE IN WAYS PREVIOUSLY RESERVED TO CERTAIN CIRCLES OF HELL. It’s a gorgeous, bright miniseries halfway through, and certainly worthy of a tpb grab when it wraps.
- The Amory Wars: Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV #5
- Batman #28
- East of West #34
- My Hero Academia Vol. 9
- Seven To Eternity #8
- Sex Criminals #20
- X-Men: Gold #9
Not a big week. I’m happy for that.
X-Men Gold continues into the Secret Empire stuff. I’m pushing through. It’s an okay story. I’m just ready for more X-Men-only stories.
Batman is really, really, really good. I never thought I’d look forward to a DC book this way, but I am geeked for this book. The Riddler v. Joker story is kicking a ton of butt. Mikel Janin’s art is unreal.
Sex Criminals is heating up. Last month’s weiner-mobile joke was pretty damn hilarious. I don’t know how Fraction and Zdarsky are going to top themselves. This is one of those books that is so solid, so top-notch, it’s hard to know how it can get better. Like your favorite band’s first album, you’re not sure if their later work will be better, or even at the same level, as that first album. I have high hopes. These chums are solid.
I have some words about Seven to Eternity on the show this week, so I won’t go too deep into it. Check tomorrow’s episode.
Finally, The Amory Wars: Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV continues to be weeeeeeird. But a good weird. A Co&Ca-fan-level weird. Keep it coming, Chondra Echert and Claudio Sanchez. I’m ready.
